Kanie Town, in cooperation with director Tsutsumi Yukihiko, presents the short film Corpse Candle based on the story by Kosakai Fuboku

Kanie Town, Aichi Prefecture produced the short film Corpse Candle as part of city promotion. Corpse Candle is based on the work of mystery writer Kosakai Fuboku (1890-1929) who was born in Kanie. (Release date March 30th, 2020.)

Kosakai Fuboku was a medical doctor from Kanie, who was also a translator and writer. He worked with Edogawa Ranpo and Yokomizu Seishi, and is said to have been a pioneer of Japanese mystery novels who left many stories in the world. Although he died suddenly at the young age of 38, he wrote over 140 stories over the span of five years during the 1920s and was highly acclaimed. Many of his literary works are out-of-print, however some are currently in the public domain and available on the Internet. In Kanie these stories are being buried in the waves of time. In cooperation with film director Tsutsumi Yukihiko, we shine a spotlight on Kosakai Fuboku’s work to celebrate the 130 year anniversary of his birth. We revived his mystery story Corpse Candle with this short film.

Having worked closely with Director Tsutsumi before, the lead role is played by Nishikawa Kazumasa, headmaster of Nishikawa-ryu dance company. Nishikawa-ryu is one of the five major schools of traditional Japanese Buyo dance, well-known for Nagoya Odori. Despite being only 13 minutes in length, the film manages to capture the suspense of the original story.

Corpse Candle Synopsis

One stormy night, monk Osho and an apprentice Hoshin hear a suspicious noise coming from the main hall of their temple. The two of them must investigate in the pitch dark, relying on the light of a single wax candle. It is then that the terrified Hoshin learns, straight from the mouth of Osho, the truth about the shocking secret hidden in the wax…

The short film project

Over 100 long years have passed since Kosakai Fuboku left behind his many masterpieces. His work has not yet faded away, but these days it is rare to hear his name. Not only did Fuboku leave behind many stories, he established the field of mystery writing at the dawn of the era of Japanese detective novels. He paved the way for peers like Edogawa Ranpo and mystery writer Yokomizo Seishi, who penned the Kindaichi Kosuke detective series.

As someone who greatly influenced his peers, and helped established the Japanese detective genre, we think it would be a grave loss to the mystery world not to shine a spotlight on Fuboku.

The origin of the name Fuboku (不木) in kanji is a saying. “One who does not stand out at first, but stands out later, is a real human.” True to his name’s origins, this is a modern day revival of his historic work. This short film project is an effort to publicize his captivating stories for the world.

Corpse Candle is Kanie’s first film production. We are planning production of a second and third film. Please keep an eye out for future projects from “Mysterious Kanie Town.”
